Welcome Visitors

Fr Joe Turay, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Makeni, with Jon Kay outside Sheffield station

We were very pleased to welcome some of our Sierra Leone partners to Sheffield in 2018.

In May our good friend Fr Joe Turay, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Makeni (UNIMAK), was attending a conference at Cambridge University. While in the UK he made time to come up to Sheffield to meet the Makeni Trust Fund trustees, the people of Mother of God parish, who have been regular supporters for many years, and to make contact with staff of Sheffield University.

Then in September, following his appointment as director of Caritas in Makeni, Fr Benjamin Sesay, the Finance Director at UNIMAK visited the UK to make contact with CAFOD and other organisations. He was accompanied by Mercy Mwaura, who is well known to the Makeni Trust Fund. Initially Mercy was appointed by VMM to work with Sr Mary Sweeney at St Joseph’s School for the Hearing Impaired in Makeni. When VMM withdrew their support at the time of the Ebola outbreak, the Trust was able to assist Mercy to continue working with Sr Mary and with UNIMAK. Mercy now works full-time at UNIMAK at their Infectious Disease Research Laboratory.

Fr Benjamin and Mercy Mwaura both came to stay with us briefly in Sheffield, and meet the trustees.
